Stephen Brookfield on Creative & Critical Thinking
In this lecture, Stephen starts talking about his studies, his performances as a student and the importance to understand the roles that are generated within the classroom, the teacher being and the role depends a lot on what the teacher has been learned as a student, this is how is able to face and help a situation, when the teacher has already lived.
For Stephen, critical thinking is a mental process, where the different decisions we make in life are evaluated, that is, we rely on assumptions to make decisions, and that in terms of creativity is the way in which we take into account the different points of view or the different edges of a situation.
From the concepts of critical thinking and creative Brookfield explain 3 different types of assumptions:
- •casual: it has to do with the assumptions we make in our daily life that has to do directly with the cause and effect relationship.
- •prescriptive: assumptions about how things should be, how we should behave based on the codes that are prescriptive.
- •paradigmatic: it has to do with what is framed, with our collective memory, or what we would call common sense.
As a second part, Stephen explains 4 keys of intellectual traditions in critical thinking:
Analytical philosophy: it defines a critic who is able to construct, argue, deduce, and has good use of language.
natural science: refers to the correct use of the scientific method, where is able to analyze the diversity of phenomena, creates, and gives creative solutions, this critic is also able to discuss theories.
Critical theory: the critic in this part has political and social consciousness, makes sense, is someone who is aware of the real problems and conflicts of the society.
Pragmatism: refers to the use of knowledge as a reinvention, the pragmatic critic is someone who is discovering and creating different ways of learning and thinking in methods.
In the video he also gave some tips through suggestive questions, one of them was how we could help students develop critical and creative thinking?
• Critical incident questionnaire
• Modeling comments
• Express assumptions in a discussion.
• Finalizing presentations, discussions and questions.
• Chalk talk, visual discussion.

For no one is strange that the teacher - student relationship is no longer similar to the traditional one in which the apprentice listened and the teacher spoke, in the current system it is not at least, it should not be the same. For this reason, and if we want to provide a high quality education in our schools, we must recognize that the student of today is different from that of years ago, and therefore, his role in the teaching - learning process is no longer the same .

The student who is limited to assimilating information is no longer useful, but must be critical, inquiring, reflective, investigative.
Stephen in this conference shows us how and why we should opt for the construction of critical thinking, pointing out the different types of assumptions that could be presented for the case of the student. Your summary has the main and fair ideas that clarify the above.
